The final day of the World Economic Forum summit on Europe and Central Asia in Vienna closed in the same optimistic mood which has characterized meetings since the opening session.

Many challenges lie ahead for the region but there seems to be a collective realization that Europe in particular can no longer rest on its history and current wealth. Longer term strategies need to be worked through and then implemented. Huge opportunities existed but structures needed to change. Innovation is vital.

In a snap poll during the final session when delegates were asked: What is the key to unlocking Europe and Central Asia's innovation and growth potential, the two top answers were education and skills which received nearly 50% of the vote and enterprise culture which received nearly 25%. The other 7 categories which included answers like labour market, global political shifts and rule of law among others received less then 25% put together.

The view is therefore very clear. The answer in the future is to educate and innovate in a "can do" culture. The challenge now is how Europe can embrace Central Asia as a regional partner and change into highly educated region which is continually looking outward whilst moving forward.

As I leave I say goodbye to old and new friends. I have a special hug for the social entrepreneurs who have attended. They are all so passionate about their fellow human beings and the future of the planet. They are inspirational and if Europe is to change and move forward in this new spirit, then social entrepreneurs have a crucial role to play.
