Energy Security: What are the next steps?
By: Nicole Tapscott
During Wednesday’s session on Rethinking Energy Security, we heard the views of business leaders, members of government from the developing and developed worlds, heads of NGOs and numerous others as they discussed and debated the next moves needed to ensure energy security in the future.
Common threads of conversation included: increased fuel efficiency, the greater use of renewable energy sources, lessening our demand for oil, increasing or decreasing subsidies where appropriate, more national governance, more global governance, targeted investment and global partnerships.
In general, panellists agreed on the need to find an optimized way of living on this planet, while still allowing for economic growth, food security, and water security. Everything is interconnected to energy and though the issue of future energy security will not go away, it can be addressed.
Finding solutions, however, will not be easy. It was emphasised that one country cannot do it alone but refocusing efforts on energy security represents an investment in the future and developed countries owe it to the global good to lead the way.
Were you in the session? What do you think? How can we take measured steps towards global and regional energy security?
