Entree to this year's World Economic Forum
By: World Economic Forum
It’s snowing like crazy here at Davos this morning. Nothing unusual about that you may think but there’s been a distinct lack of snow in Switzerland this winter prompting fears about the effect on the tourist industry. But it’s the perfect entree for this this year’s World Economic Forum where delegates will discuss climate change and the future of the planet throughout a series of plenary sessions and forums. Obviously the business world has a key role to play in identifying the issue and changing its collective behaviour to help save the planet. But how is the question? This year’s agenda looks fascinating. In the past few years some critics have argued that the agenda has been dominated by too many social issues. Others have said the opposite claiming that the meeting is nothing other than a giant get-together for the corporate elite. People will always have opinions but this year it looks like the issues of environment, social and business are integrated in the forums meaning that constructive discussion is very likely. One delegate told me at last night’s opening "welcome cocktail" that this was the best looking WEF agenda ever. As someone who has been involved in practical projects in fighting poverty and arguing for positive action like encouraging ethical consumption, the fact that everyone is sitting round the table looking at a way forward is fantastically encouraging. So, I’m in a positive frame of mind. But let’s see what happens. Will it continue to snow or will snow be confined to the history book? There’s a feeling that the world is at a critical moment and it’s up to the human race to act together to make the changes which need to happen. The leaders from all the different sectors are here in Davos. There is a positive buzz here. People are in deep discussions over coffee – it’s just the beginning – it will be interesting to see what the atmosphere will be by the end of what is certain to be a fascinating and relevant week.
