Here are Ben Verwaayen, CEO of BT Group’s thoughts on an Annual Meeting session.

"I’ve just participated in a plenary session entitled Jobs of the Future. The big question is: where will the jobs of the future come from? This is an issue not just in the developed world where jobs in manufacturing and commodity services are sourced increasingly from overseas, but for the under-employed in all countries.

It is also very pertinent to BT. After all, we create the networks that enable organisations to source labour globally, that enable companies of any size to be global, that eliminate the necessity – and with it the protection – for the physical presence of a workforce.

Organisations need to be responsive to customer needs and create value. They need to be innovative not just in R&D but equally in creating new opportunities. Governments, employers and also individuals have clear challenges and responsibilities to take steps to improve competitiveness.

The more organisations invest in people’s capabilities the more commercial opportunities they will realise."
